The ‘SWOT Analysis’ is a strategic planning tool for identifying and assessing the strengths,
weaknesses, opportunities, and threats affecting an organization, a business problem, or a
project.

A SWOT exercise is the process of capturing information to provide the material needed to do an
analysis. The process begins by collecting information about the organization or the project. It
is focused on collecting information on four specific categories:

Strengths are positive characteristic or attributes internal to an organization or a project that are
within its control that may facilitate meeting its goals and objectives

Weaknesses are negative characteristics or attributes internal to an organization or a project that
are within its control that may impede meeting its goals and objectives

Opportunities are external factors that an organization or project should (or could) develop

Threats are external factors beyond an organization’s control that could place the organization
or a project at risk

Conduct a SWOT exercise and complete and develop a SWOT template.
This is a first step toward the analysis of those results, to become ‘informed’ and lead to a
strategic position. Decisions are made, based on an interpretation of the information that is
summarized in the matrix.

Develop the ‘SWOT Matrix’ and discuss possible project initiatives that might be important to
consider addressing the business problem(s) that the organization faces or to take advantage of
the business opportunity(s) that the organization may have.
